Ask the Acupuncturists |
Q. I have diabetes and have not been able to get my blood sugar under control through diet. I would like to put off insulin if possible--can acupuncture or herbs help?
A.Diabetes is an epidemic in the US, with incidence rates reported as high as 15-20% in some populations and with substantial increases in all age and racial groups in the past few years.
Chinese medicine, relying mainly on herb formulas, but also on acupuncture, has been utilized extensively in China to reduce blood sugar in persons with diabetes, especially those with the most common type (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus).
In your case, as you are not yet insulin dependent, within four weeks prescribed Chinese herbs in therapeutic dosages along with a healthy diet and exercise will reduce blood glucose levels with less fluctuations throughout the day.

| Pride Parade Memories |
It was quite an honor to be the Grand Marshall of the Pride Parade. Our Pathways team of marchers was a real community effort and included members of every branch of Pathways extended family-board members, CAB, clients, practitioners and staff.
As we as a group gained more confidence in our role, we became more and more engaged with the audience around us. Around each corner we were greeted by waving and cheers and we waved and cheered in response.
I was impressed by the excellent planning-Pathways message was very visible/legible, the signs were easy to carry, and ample supplies of water and sunscreen were available-consistent with Pathways culture of excellence, caring and attention to everyone's wellbeing while also making a very important statement. We were there to celebrate, commemorate, and promote Pathways 20 years of care for people with HIV/AIDS and for the GLBT community.
Of course, Kristen Porter's rainbow bangs, the classic convertible she rode in escorted by Moving Violations members on motorcycles, and handing out hundreds of Pathways stickers to parade watchers and their kids along the route all made for a fun and exciting day!

New Study Finds Acupuncture Superior
to
Usual Care for Treating Back Pain
As reported in the publication, Acupuncture Today, a new study, which was published in the May 11, 2009 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, examined a group of 638 patients suffering from back pain to determine if acupuncture is superior to usual care for treating back pain.
At the end of the study the researchers concluded that, "Compared with usual care, individualized acupuncture, standardized acupuncture and simulated acupuncture had beneficial and persisting effects on chronic back pain. These treatments resulted in clinically meaningful improvements in function. ...For clinicians and patients seeking a relatively safe and effective treatment for a condition for which conventional treatments are often ineffective, various methods of acupuncture point stimulation appear to be reasonable options."
